"Abstract

Sports team coach leadership has always been admired by society, and has proven a valuable case-study for various other contexts. It plays a crucial role in player and team performance. Over the last years, several studies have taken an ecological approach towards sports teams, bringing forward several questions concerning the coach’s modus operandi and the interactions among coach, team, athlete and game environment. Understanding the relation between autonomy and control is of paramount importance to the achievement of better performances. The present conceptual study examines how a coach may promote his players’ and team’s autonomy without relinquishing control over them.
